What People Say

about our work:

The newly-named "dynamic duo" with Kathleen Velo, a photographer and educator, and the former Voices' board member who nominated us for the award.
In September 2005 we were nominated for the Compass Health Care Dynamic Duo Award, an annual award honoring the efforts of Tucsonans who have worked as a successful team to better the community in some way. To our surprise, we were awarded the "Making a Difference" award for our work with the Voices' program, 110 Degrees, mentoring low-income teenagers in writing and photography.

about our workshops:

"...engaging, fun, and practical. Teachers expressed how inspiring and helpful Josh's photography examples and technical tips were for their own work. Kimi's exercises on writing about place freed everyone to feel creative and to express visually and emotionally statements about places and situations."
    -Lisa Falk, Director of Education
    Arizona State Museum, Tucson, AZ

"...fun, interesting, thought provoking, emotionally moving. The activities helped us become aware of our surroundings by focusing our attention on a slice of our neighborhood and describing it in detail."
    -Fran Gibbs, participant
    Community Story Workshop, Tucson, AZ

"... insightful, detailed and thorough ... full of solid practical advice and concrete examples of how the camera can provide us with new ways of seeing and capturing the world."
    -Guha Shankar, Ph.D., Folklife Specialist
American Folklife Center, Library of Congress

about our documentary work:

"Josh Schachter's powerful images help URI to share our work with funders that support our programs, with conference audiences interested in this arena, with neighborhood groups who are attempting their own restoration efforts, and with the global audience of the Internet. Josh's images are critical to the success of our efforts."
    -Colleen Murphy Dunning
